What a day in a kayak actually costs.

A kayak fits where the tour boats cannot: the dome at Benagil, the grottoes under Ponta da Piedade, Emerald Cave on the Colorado, the karst arches of Phang Nga. Swell and tide decide whether you get inside, so the departure time matters more than the boat.

Paddling trips carry conditions the booking page buries. Most sea tours want you able to swim, and set a minimum age around eight. Doubles are the default, so one person booking alone gets paired with a stranger. Weight limits sit near 120kg on a sit-on-top and lower in a clear hull. Cave and open-sea departures cancel on swell, and how much of your money comes back depends on the operator. Dry bags are usually included. Dry clothes are not.

Halong and Lan Ha Bay
Nearly two thousand limestone towers stand in a bay shallow enough to paddle between them. The kayak hour on a day boat is short, and the good operators drop you inside a tunnel at Luon or under the overhangs at Titop where the water goes still and green. Mangrove Tunnels
Red mangrove grows its roots into arches, and where a channel runs under them the canopy closes over your head. Florida, Krabi and the Yucatan all have them. No engine fits, the water is warm and flat, and the noise stops. Guides go at low tide, when the roots are exposed and the tunnel is tall enough to sit up in.
